Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Positive Aspect for Struggling Lazio

The mood at their home stadium was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a team that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist a thread holding it together in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if progress is being made or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to stay there a while longer. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. The club couldn't risk to weaken their team without replacements.

He signed in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
