Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
