Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted recently over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week due to the severe damage from Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
